DOCTOR ATOMIC (2)

The Teatro de la Maestranza once again welcomes the public at large with a new season characterised by diversity: opera, jazz, classical ballet and contemporary dance. A season for all, in the theatre for all.

ÁNGEL CORELLA Y ARA MALIKIÁN

The Opera Series opens with Don Giovanni, the “opera of operas” and without a doubt one of the most related to the name of Seville, which Mozart performed for the first time in Prague.  It returns between November 21st and 29th in the production of the Teatro de la Maestranza conceived by Mario Gas. In his awaited meeting with the Sevilian public, the baritone Carlos Álvarez, will lead a cast of exceptional Spanish voices like Yolanda Auyanet, Maite Alberola, José Luis Sola, David Menéndez or Rocío Ignacio, conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev, an emerging talent in the Baroque and Classical repertoire. Between February 6th and 14th 2015, Norma by Bellini arrives, one of the great Romantic dramas of the Bel Canto. The great American soprano Angela Meade together with the famous Italian mezzo-soprano Sonia Ganassi and the progressing Spanish tenor, Sergio Escobar, under the baton of Maurizio Benini, perform a production of the Teatro Regio of Turín, with stage management of Vittorio Borrelli, based on an original idea of Alberto Fassini. In March 2015-between 13th and 18th, the Maestranza performs for the first time in Spain, Doctor Atomic by John Adams, one of the most important composers of the contemporary scene. With libretto of the dramatist, it recreates the preparation of the first atomic bomb. Pedro Halffter conducts a staging by Yuval Sharon for the Karlsruhe Staatstheater of Germany with the baritone Lee Poulis  and the American soprano Jessica Rivera. Puccini’s Tosca, has been impressing audiences since its premiere between May 29th and June 13th 2015, in six performances, featuring the coproduction of La Maestranza and the Liceu.  They present this opera conceived by Paco Azorín, as far as the staging is concerned, and which will count with Pedro Halffter conducting and the cast led by the soprano Hui He –one of the great Tosca experts- the tenor from Tenerife Jorge de León and the Italian baritone Ambrogio Maestri.

La pequeña flauta mágica based on Mozart’s Magic Flute, designed by Joan Font (Els Comediants) and produced by the Liceu of Barcelona is welcomed once again for school children and families.

The other event will take place on March 21st thanks to the counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky, who since his appearance has become a star of the Baroque musical scene. NORMA (1)

The Flamenco series proposes for this season to link the past and future of the genre. Hence, on January 17th, flamenco is the protagonist and does not forget that it is an art of living maturity an anthological meeting of great maestros that were and are still at t heir more of 70 years of age. On the contrary: on February 8th, Divino Tesoro launches a project for the future, as none of the young artists mentioned are not beyond their thirties. Moreover, on February 25th, Un año sin Paco de Lucía proposes an exceptional summit of the flamenco guitar, 6 guitar players to pay homage to the 6 strings that drastically change the genre.

In the Piano series, we will have the opportunity to enjoy two young talents. On the one hand, Fazil Say, pianist and prolific composer with a strong musical temper and personality and Benjamin Grosvenor, one of those early cases of talent and brilliance related to a surprising performing maturity.
