The Federación de Sociedades Musicales de la Comunidad Valenciana (FSMCV) is an association with more than 47 years of existence gathering 547 musical societies (50% of Spain) with 40,000 musicians, 60,000 students of music schools and more than 200,000 members. The musical societies, present in 90% of the municipalities of more than 200 inhabitants of Alicante, Castellon y Valencia are a social and educational project unique in the world and are the main cultural agent of the Government of Valencia Region according to the University of Valencia.
Within the musical societies there are more than 1,686 artistic groups with 1,075 bands, 174 orchestras, 233 choirs, 133 chamber ensembles, 52 big bands and 19 groups of dulzaina and tabal (pipe and drum) in an autonomous region counting with 542 municipalities. If these impressive figures were extrapolated to the whole of Spain it would be necessary to multiply them by 9.
The association counts with 163 centenary musical societies, which gives an idea of its strength and long social, educational and cultural experience. The FSMCV, aimed at promoting awareness on the integrating character of this associative gathering which takes part of the cultural heritage of the Valencian people and Spain as a whole, has as its main purpose to support the promotion and development of musical societies, encouraging their growth, diversification, internationalisation, perfection and excellence, both in the musical educational work and its sociocultural activity.
The Joven Orquesta Sinfónica de la FSMCV, conducted by Cristóbal Soler, and the Joven Banda Sinfónica de la FSMCV, conducted by Beatriz Fernández, are integrated by very talented musicians coming from the districts of Alicante, Castellon and Valencia and is an example of the unique phenomenon in the world representing musical societies.
