The aim of the Fundación Pau Casals is to preserve and disseminate the cultural and humanistic legacy of one of the most universal names of music and promote activities and projects for the young generations related with musical excellence and the defence of the commitment of music with peace, justice and democracy.

Pau Casals (1876, El Vendrell-1973, San Juan de Puerto Rico) was a musician, cellist, orchestral conductor and composer of international reference. His musical contribution, especially in the performance of violoncello and orchestral conducting, rank him as one of the most important international musicians in the history of 20th century music. He maintained throughout his long and intense life an extraordinary coherence with his ideas and values. Music was his instrument to defend a better world and the violoncello and the conductor’s baton were his only arms. The charity concerts for the people affected from the bombardments in Catalonia, the aid to thousands of Spanish refugees in the concentration camps of the south of France, his relation with the United Nations Organisation, his international crusade against nuclear weapons escalation and his commitment with humanitarian initiatives of all types accompanied him throughout an extraordinary biography of musical innovation and creation.

The Fundación Pau Casals manages the Museum located in San Salvador (El Vendrell), with an intensive cultural activity throughout the entire year and Pablo Casals, Internacional Award for Young Cellists.

Besides it participates and coordinates itself with international projects in other countries where there are institutions, festivals or events dedicated to Pau Casals, especially with Puerto Rico, France and USA.

The fields of activity of the foundation are:

            HERITAGE

Conservation, dissemination and management of the cultural legacy which, according to the will of Pau Casals, is deposited in Catalonia.

The Museo Pau Casals is located in the maestro’s house which he built in front of the sea, on the beach of Sant Salvador, in the Vendrell. The building and gardens were refurbished and were the core of a target of a museological equipment and fittings project which presents the biography of Pau Casals and the international relevance of his artistic works and his humanitarian commitment. The Foundation preserves an important documental, artistic and historical legacy and promotes and supports projects and activities of investigation, documentation and dissemination of issues related with the work of Pau Casals and his endowment funds.
