The second stage of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas started on May 29th 1999. Since then, this association of musicians has alternated their programme of symphonic or chamber concerts with joint productions with Amigos Canarios de la Zarzuela, Amigos Canarios de la Ópera, Taller de Ópera de Cámara de Gran Canaria, Teatro Cuyás, Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Festival de Música de Canarias, Fundación Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria or Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.
This activity, developed in recent years has allowed young musicians from Gran Canaria to acquire an important orchestral experience working with conductors like Guido Ajmon-Marsan, Felipe Amor, Patrick Baton, Ángel Camacho, José María Damunt, Ricardo Frizza, Monserrat Font Marco, Ignacio García Vidal, José Luis Gómez, Gregorio Gutiérrez, Francesc Llongueres, Juan José Ocón, Miquel Ortega, Pascual Osa, Miguel Roa or Rafael Sánchez. Within the symphonic activity, the OSLP has accompanied soloists like Celso Albelo, Jorge de León, Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Francisco Corujo, Concha Buika, Lucas Alemán, Juan Pablo Alemán, Radovan Cavallin, Francisco Martínez Ramos, Salvador Mir, Sergio Marrero or Víctor Parra.
Among its multiple projects, the Popular New Year concert has become an unavoidable annual event, obtaining full house in several performances and reaching up to 6,000 people in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.
The Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas counts with a subsidy from the Department of Culture and Historic Heritage of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and is also a non-profit institution which struggles for the recognition and rights of musicians in the Canary Islands. Since last March 2017, it has become the resident orchestra of the Teatro Cruce de Culturas in the Cruce de Arinaga (Agüimes) and Rafael Sánchez-Araña has been appointed as principal conductor.
During 2019 its 20th anniversary is being celebrated with such ambitious projects as the spectacular cantata Carmina Burana together with the Coro de la Sinfónica de Las Palmas, directed by Maite Robaina, the baritone Carlos Daza, the countertenor Chrisitan Gil-Borrelli and the soprano Eugenia Boix, all the latter under the baton of our maestro Rafael Sánchez-Araña, achieving full house once again.
Another of the projects that has been created to celebrate these twenty years of the second stage of the OSLP and which is especially important for them, is the concert ‘En Amistad’. The concert will be led by three of the best bel canto voices at an international level and who are also from Canary Islands: Jorge de León, Celso Albelo and Francisco Corujo. The title of this concert clearly express, not only the relation that joins these three international figures, but also the work environment, the affection, respect and dedication which shows its musicians in each rehearsal and in each concert.
The topping of this beautiful cake will be the recording of the album entitled 20 Aniversario with the label IBS Classical and which will consist basically of Canarian music in symphonic version. For this project, several special guests are counted with like the Coro de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas, Francisco Corujo (tenor), Celso Albelo (tenor), Benito Cabrera (timple), Germán Lopez (timple), Iván quintana (voice), Alba Pérez (voice), Juan Carlos Sierra (Venezuelan cuatro).
