Production of the Lyrical Season: Francisco Rodríguez

The staging of La Traviata, Aida and Othello, three great operas included in different stylistic periods of Giuseppe Verdi, are the mainstay of the 30th Lyrical Season of the Teatro Cervantes de Málaga. Spanish voices of proven quality, supported by young talents of the vocal artistry scenario from Malaga and Spain, integrate the casts of the proposals of the 2018-2019 opera series.

Ainhoa Arteta, Antonio Gandía and Juan Jesús Rodríguez lead the cast of the first opera which will be performed in the 30th series, La Traviata, and which will also count with the voices of Mónica Campaña, Alba Chantar, Luis Pacetti, Francis Tójar, Isaac Galán and José Manuel Díaz. The febrile bitterness of Violetta Valéry will be listened to and seen on November 23rd and 25th in Malaga in a stage production of the Teatro Villamarta de Jerez directed by Francisco López and musical production of the Cervantes, with José María Moreno in the pit together with the professors of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga and Salvador Vázquez coordinating the voices of the Coro de Ópera de Málaga.

The 30th season will continue with Aida, one of the master works of the sub-genre called the French grand opera. The maestro from Malaga, Arturo Díez Boscovich will conduct in the pit, where the OFM will perform again and Salvador Vázquez will repeat with the Coro de Ópera de Málaga, whilst Ignacio García will create the theatrical action of this proposal of Producciones Telón and the Teatro Cervantes.

Maribel Ortega, Alejandro Roy, Mali Corbacho and Luis Cansino are the four main characters of an opera which will rise the curtains on March 1st and 3rd 2019. Felipe Bou and Christian Díaz close the cast of this lyrical drama conceived by Verdi like an integral show in which the psychological content of the text is blended with an exotic score, of fine and suggestive orchestral and melodic literature.

The last but one opera of Verdi, Othello (1887), will close the thirtieth edition on May 3rd and 5th 2019. Marco Guidarini will put together the performances of Jorge de León, Rocío Ignacio and Carlos Álvarez with the instruments of the OFM, with Salvador Vázquez again leading the Coro de Ópera de Málaga, in a key work of the lyrical production of the Transalpine composer. The stage manager Alfonso Romero will be entrusted to join the plot prepared by the libretto writer Arrigo Boito on the drama of Shakespeare. The cast of this stage production of the Teatro Principal de Palma and musical one of the Teatro Cervantes will be closed with the participation of Luis Pacetti, Marifé Nogales, Francis Tójar, Gerardo López and Isaac Galán in the secondary roles.

Likewise, the Teatro Cervantes has prepared a sample of posters, handheld programmes and abundant graphic material, O sole! Vita! Eternitá! which recalls thirty years of performances of opera zarzuela. Its inauguration gave way to an extraordinary recital with the voices of the sopranos Mónica Campaña and María Lourdes Benítez, the tenor Luis Pacetti and the bass Francis Tójar in a Concierto aniversario 30 Temporada Lírica beyond subscriptions with musical fragments by Mozart, Donizetti, Moreno Torroba, Fernández Caballero, Rossini, Bellini, Puccini, Verdi, Wagner or Vives, among others. Salvador Vázquez conducted from the easel the singers, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga and the Coro de Ópera de Málaga.

The exhibition and recital served as a preamble to the three performances and also to remember that since the opera returned in April 1987 to the refurbished Teatro Cervantes with a Così fan tutte in a production of the National Chamber Opera of Lodz, some of the best international soloists and best known titles of the repertoire have passed through Malaga.
